AWMA is pleased to announce that JoAnn Hackos, PhD, will be presenting our first webinar of 2009: "Surviving and Thriving in a Flat World." This hour-long event will take place Thursday, February 5, 2009, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Eastern Time. The cost is $50 (US) for AMWA members, $150 for nonmembers—a great opportunity for career development at an affordable price!

Dr Hackos will be discussing how medical writers can meet the challenges of the current economy and concerns about the outsourcing of writing work. In her presentation, she will describe how medical writers can adapt as budgets tighten and expectations change. How can we define what we do in ways that showcase our expertise? What strategies enable us to take advantage of new developments in information technology, and how can these strategies advance our careers during uncertain times?

For more than 25 years, Hackos has addressed audiences internationally on subjects ranging from content management, project management, effective interfaces and information, minimal information products, usability testing, and online and Web-based information to managing the information design and development process.

Dr Hackos is president of Comtech Services, a content-management and information-design firm based in Denver, CO, which she founded in 1978. She is director of the Center for Information-Development Management (CIDM), a membership organization focused on content-management and information-development best practices. She authored Information Development: Managing Your Documentation Projects, Portfolio and People (Wiley 2006), Content Management for Dynamic Web Delivery (Wiley 2002), Managing Your Documentation Projects (Wiley 1994), Standards for Online Communication (Wiley 1997), and User and Task Analysis for Interface Design (Wiley 1998). Hackos is a fellow and past president of the Society for Technical Communication (STC).

Mark your calendars now, and plan to join the conversation on February 5.
