AMWA Update

ANNUAL CONFERENCE INFORMATION

Registration opened on July 21 with great success. AMWA has already received more than 700 registrations! There is still time to join us in Louisville, October 23-25, so don’t delay—register and make your hotel reservation today! Don’t forget that your conference registration fee includes all receptions, special events such as Breakfast With the Exhibitors and Creative Readings, and 38 open sessions, plus unlimited networking opportunities. In addition, the new AMWA Pavilion will feature interactive health awareness booths. Free blood pressure checks, BMI tests, bone density scans, and more will be available for all AMWA attendees. The complimentary cybercafé will also be available for all attendees beginning on Thursday morning.

There are plenty of seats available in workshops, breakfast roundtables, and coffee and dessert klatches, although some workshops and tables are full. Individual activities that are full are indicated as such on the online registration form. The Web site conference page also includes a closure list for workshops, klatches, and roundtables to indicate availability before you register.

Tours
How often do you get a chance for a truly unique experience? Only in Louisville can you breakfast at the backstretch at the world-famous Churchill Downs while watching spectacular thoroughbreds gallop through their morning training. And only at the University of Louisville can you tour the Cardiovascular Innovation Institute or the Paris Simulation Center and learn firsthand about their exciting and innovative medical programs. AMWA has lined up several tours designed to showcase the rich heritage and tradition of Louisville and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The deadline for reserving your space with the tour company is September 24. We highly recommend that you make your reservations in advance because the tour company requires that a minimum number of tickets be sold for a tour to be run. Complete tour descriptions and the reservation form are available on our Web site.

Creative Readings
Calling all writers! Are you a medical communicator who also happens to be a poet, playwright, short-story writer, or humorist? Would you like to share your work with fellow AMWA attendees in an appreciative and relaxed setting? Then make plans to participate in the popular Creative Readings event at the conference. Let your “creative writer” side be known!

New this year!
Inspired by Dr Neil Shulman, the popular physician-author-humorist, we’re hoping to publish our own “101 Ways to Know….” Our title will be: 101 Ways to Know You’re a Medical Writer. We’re inviting all AMWA members to contribute their ideas. For more information, visit the Creative Readings page on AMWA’s Web site.

Getting to the hotel
AMWA has arranged for shuttle service to and from the Galt House and airport for AMWA attendees. The fee for a one-way trip is $15 with a discounted rate of $22 for round trip. (Fees are slightly higher before 7:00 AM and after 8:00 PM.) To make a shuttle reservation, visit the Sandollar Limo Web site and put “AMWA” in the comments section on the Web order form or call (502) 366-2628 and identify yourself as an AMWA attendee. Cab rates to and from the airport are about $19.50. Both rates are subject to change without notice. The airport is approximately 15 minutes from the hotel. For more information about traveling to and from the airport, including rental car information, please visit the Louisville Airport Web site.

Job Board
You are invited to publicize job opportunities in the field of medical communication on the Job Board at the conference. We are expecting 1,000 attendees, so this is a great opportunity for you to list your job openings! There is no charge for this service. Details are available on our Web site.
