AMWA'S ANNUAL CONFERENCE—OCTOBER 22-24, 2009

Reason #3 to Attend the AMWA Annual Conference:
Dallas—Big, Bold, and Budget-Friendly

Location, location, location! Geographically, Dallas is centrally located in the US, with 2 airports and an AMTRAK station. The Sheraton Dallas Hotel has a great rate of $139 for AMWA attendees and is close to everything! Located in the heart of the city’s arts and financial district, it’s connected to Plaza of the Americas, a shopping complex with numerous eateries to fit every budget. Right by the hotel is the DART Rail stop and the trolley that can take you throughout the city for a nominal fee. A short walk will take you to the Dallas Museum of Art, the Myerson Symphony Center, and many of Dallas’ most popular attractions and restaurants. There are also cowboys, cowgirls, lively Western bars, authentic Texas barbeque, and plenty of places to shop for your own cowboy hats and boots. The weather’s great, too! What’s not to like? To view the entire list of the Top 10 Reasons to attend AMWA’s annual conference, visit our Web site.

Tours
AMWA has lined up several exciting and unique tours designed to showcase the city of Dallas and the spirit of Texas. Spend a day being dazzled by the history and architecture of the city with the Dallas Dazzles City Tour; a visit to the famous Sixth Avenue Museum is included. Put on your boots and hat and head West to Cowtown (Fort Worth) where you will explore fascinating Western heritage museums, shops, and eateries and spend time with a few longhorn steers during the well-known daily cattle drive. Marvel at incredible world-famous art and experience the history of women during An Afternoon Among the Arts. Step out of the hotel and into beautiful gardens at the Dallas Arboretum, where the colors of fall will be in full bloom. Plan to stay an extra night and join in on the fun with the Sunday Brunch and Sailing. Bring your sunscreen, camera, and appetite to enjoy the extensive and delectable brunch prepared by Chef Brandt, and then set sail for a relaxing 2-hour cruise aboard the Seawolf, a 40-by-25-foot sailing catamaran built of beautiful Spanish cedar. There is something for everyone at AMWA’s 69th Annual Conference, so take some time and plan an outing to experience something new and different in the Big D! A complete description of each tour and an order form are available on AMWA’s Web site.

Become an AMWA Exhibitor or Sponsor (or Both)
With an estimated attendance of 1,000 dedicated professionals who are constantly seeking new information, ideas, products, and services, AMWA’s annual conference is the perfect place to connect with the medical communication community. Visit AMWA’s Web site for a PDF file of the 2009 Exhibitor/Sponsor Prospectus.

Breakfast Roundtables
The list of breakfast roundtables has been posted on the AMWA Conference Web site. At the 2009 Annual Conference, you can choose from 77 roundtable discussions! Join your colleagues at these informal breakfast sessions to exchange ideas, experiences, and insights about topics affecting your professional life. Roundtable breakfasts are marvelous opportunities to meet other attendees in a relaxed setting to talk about a particular subject. Roundtable agendas will be posted as they are received.

Call for Walking/Running Leaders at AMWA Annual Conference
AMWA will once again offer Walking/Running with AMWA at this year's conference! Walkers and runners will gather at 6:00 each morning of the conference to start their days with a 45-minute walk or run. Would you like to lead the group of walkers or runners? This is a great way to fit in some exercise during the conference and to network with your colleagues. If you would like to be a leader, please contact Becky Phillips at AMWA headquarters (becky@amwa.org).

THE TRANSPORTATION SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S SECURE FLIGHT PROGRAM STARTED MAY 15, 2009
For any new airline reservation created after May 15, 2009, the passenger's name MUST match his or her photo ID exactly, eg, if your driver's license reads Jane Q. Smith, the name on the airline ticket must read Jane Q. Smith. For more information please visit www.tsa.gov, keyword: Secure Flight.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!
This month our survey question relates to AMWA’s discounted reference materials. As AMWA continues to grow and lead the way in medical communication, we want to hear your thoughts through these brief surveys throughout the year. Please take a couple of minutes to give us your input.

SURVEY SAYS…!
Our May Survey asked questions about AMWA’s 2009 Annual Conference. Ninety-one percent of the respondents said they would be traveling by airplane, and the remaining 9% said they would carpool to the annual conference. Fifty-five percent said they were aware that one can post carpool information (and requests for roommates) on the AMWA Bulletin Board. Of the survey respondents, 73% knew that all 3 of the persons listed, David Dary, Karen Woolley, PhD, and Annette Flanagin, RN, MA, will be speaking at the annual conference.

USE AMAZON LINKS FROM AMWA’S WEB SITE
AMWA is an Amazon Associate. In addition to the Amazon graphic link on the AMWA home page, all the titles in the Resources for Medical Communicators section are set up to use the Associate program. Whether you write or edit books or buy them and want to patronize your fellow AMWA members, AMWA has the Web page for you. The AMWA Authors & Editors marketplace lets AMWA members buy books listed by fellow members. This win-win goes even further, because a small percentage of each sale is income for AMWA. So if you are buying something from Amazon, click through AMWA’s Web site.

PENDING CHANGES IN SCIENCE/CORE WORKSHOPS
Effective January 2012, workshops with multiple classifications that include Science (SG/SBS/SDS/SDT) will only be designated with the science classification and applicable to the science fundamentals certificate. However, credit will be retained for any workshops previously taken toward a core certificate.
