The AMWA Member Spotlight program aims to recognize members who demonstrate extraordinary engagement with AMWA and their fellow members. In collaboration with the AMWA Member Engagement Committee, members are highlighted for their volunteer work, educational accomplishments, and community involvement. We are delighted to spotlight AMWA member Sunali Wadehra.

Sunali Wadehra, MD is a Senior Scientific Editor from Research to Practice. Prior to this role, she worked as a freelance medical writer, director, and editor specializing in continuing education. She has more than 15 years of combined experience in biomedical research, scientific publications and medical writing. Dr. Wadehra completed her bachelor's degree in English at the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor. She earned her medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine. She joined AMWA in 2017 and has recently been a member of the Communications Committee and Chapter Advisory Council. She was also a roundtable leader at the 2025 annual conference and has presented at past Mid-America Chapter events. She is currently the Mid-America Chapter President-Elect and is on the Education Committee and the CME Education Subcommittee.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in medical communications?

I originally chose to go to medical school because it seemed a natural pathway for someone who excelled academically. However, to this day, I hate being in hospitals, and furthermore, I didn't feel like I was fully maximizing my skill set. Growing up, I was always recognized as being a gifted writer; I wanted to see where else my MD could take me to provide an outlet for those innate talents. What started out as an experiment or exploration turned into an exciting and rewarding professional path, and I can't wait to see what's next for me as a medical writer and communicator.

What aspect of your career do you like best?

I love the lifelong learning that is innate to this profession. I get excited about each and every project that I am involved in, and it brings me joy to see myself getting smarter in new ways.

What has been the most impactful way that AMWA has helped you in your career?

As a freelance medical writer, networking was invaluable for gaining visibility in my field and growing my business. Now, as an employed medical communications professional, I appreciate the camaraderie of being a part of this community and the confidence I gain from active involvement in a professional organization.

What advice do you have for new AMWA members?

Joining AMWA is a great way to explore medical writing and communications. In addition to offering many resources to a newcomer in the field, it helps connect you with veteran medical writers who can provide guidance and support.
