Call for Nominations and Applications

The American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) invites nominations and applications for the position of Editor-in-Chief of the AMWA Journal. AMWA seeks an Editor-in-Chief who understands key issues affecting medical communications. The Editor-in-Chief must have experience in medical communication, leadership, and peer-reviewed publications. Candidates should have demonstrable knowledge of research, publishing, writing, and editing.

The Editor-in-Chief is a contracted position with a quarterly honorarium. The Editor-in-Chief will be responsible for the timely, efficient, and high-quality publication of AMWA’s quarterly, peer-reviewed journal. The position has an initial 3-year term with an option for additional renewable 1- or 2-year terms. The time commitment is approximately 2-5 hours per week depending on the production cycle. The Editor-in-Chief will appoint and engage an editorial board; he or she will collaborate with AMWA staff, the Board of Directors, and volunteer leaders to develop and produce issues and content that align with the needs and interests of medical communicators to ensure the relevance and value of the AMWA Journal.

Responsibilities will commence Spring of 2021 with the incumbent to begin as early as February 1 and no later than June 1, 2021.

 

Qualifications

Required: 

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in medical editing, writing, and publishing 
  • Minimum of 2 years of leadership or management experience
  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment with board members, volunteers, and staff
  • Recognition, credibility, and stature within medical communication
  • Ability to mentor new authors, inspire authors, and solicit articles
  • Portfolio that demonstrates their ability to write and edit in the medical communication field

Preferred:

  • AMWA member of at least 2 years
  • An advanced degree or certification related to medical writing and editing
  • Experience with digital journal submissions and/or platforms or multimedia journalism
