Value of Medical Writing

Value of Medical Writing Work Group

The American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) created the Value of Medical Writing Work Group with a goal of defining and quantifying the value of medical writing within the regulatory environment. The results of their efforts include publications, presentations, and resource-packed toolkits. While the focus of this particular effort was the regulatory writing environment, many of the findings and resources provide insight and support for the value of medical writing for all professional areas including scientific publications, health communication, grantsmanship, and more.

Key Findings

  • Medical writers improve the quality of the documents that are submitted for review, which makes the regulatory reviewer’s job easier.
  • Regulators recognize and appreciate the work and the importance of trained medical writers.
  • Regulatory medical writers feel their most valuable contributions to document preparation are clarity and organization.
  • Medical writers are interested in additional soft skills training in areas such as leadership, project management, collaboration, and diplomacy to continue to enhance their value.

Measures of Success Toolkit for Regulatory Medical Writers

The resources in this toolkit were designed to address potential barriers that medical writers often encounter as they author regulatory documents and manage other deliverables. While the focus of the toolkit is the regulatory writing environment, many of the tools and findings provide insight for the value of medical writing in all professional areas. The Measures of Success Toolkit includes templates, checklists, slide decks, and knowledge checks to help you define and improve your value in 3 key areas.
